I’ll be the first to admit that I find comfort in a routine. . . until I find myself NOT doing something because it interferes with my routine. Let me expand on that. Typically, a routine provides efficiency of time, energy, money and cognitive attention. That’s all well and good until the routine becomes limiting; deters me from exploring options; prevents me from being spontaneous, responsive or even lazy? That’s when I recognize the trap I’ve created and know that it’s time to break free.

We know how difficult it is to change a routine – try taking a new route when driving to the office or the grocery store. Try brushing your teeth or eating with your non-dominant hand. (A caution with this one: It can be messy!)

Will taking a different route to the gym make a huge difference? Perhaps not – and perhaps it may. Being truly conscious of where you go and what you do is the first step. Reawakening your consciousness, giving it something new to see or experience, is what keeps us alive, vibrant and engaged in life. It’s like switching from a black-and-white TV to Technicolor, THX surround sound in an IMAX theater!

As we grow and share, we can feel good about ourselves!
