This is the first of a six blog series designed to show you how to become aware of your resistance, identify how resistance prevents you from becoming more than you are and what actions you can to take to break free of resistance. Here we go –
Steven Pressfield authored a terrific book The War of Art. You might recognize his name – he has authored 20+ novels – including The Legend of Baggar Vance. This book is not a novel, rather it is a study of internal resistance.
Pressfield had me in the opening paragraph: “Most of us have two lives. The life we live, and the unlived life within us. Between the two stands resistance.” I knew exactly what he was talking about.
Here’s the deal with resistance – you cannot see it, touch it, hear or smell it – however, you can feel it. Do you know what resistance feels like in your life? I didn’t, and it was time to find out!
Resistance comes into play when we attempt to move, shift, grow or expand into a higher plane, a higher level of consciousness. In other words, it kicks in when we want to improve and evolve. Some examples would be changing an attitude, engaging in a new behavior, breaking habits, thinking beyond what we know. Resistance has no strength of its own…..we feed it with power of our fear.
Resistance wears many cloaks. Some examples are –
- Fear
- Procrastination
- Trouble
- Drama
- Unhappiness
- Self-doubt
- Excuses
What are some other cloaks resistance wears in your life? Dig deep and you will be amazed at just how pervasive resistance is – remember, this is your life so take charge of it!
I’d love to hear your comments on this blog.
