Welcome back! If you have been following this series of “Developing Your Self-Muscles” you have likely to at least have thought about how you can improve yourself, and those who have participated in the assessment and aerobics are experiencing phenomenal change in their lives. If you need to catch up on the last two blogs, you can access them at http://www.susanbock.com/blog.

Here are a few more tips (provided by Mark Tyrrell) for you to consider as you create your self-muscle routine:

#1. Self-belief is learned. Your level of self-belief isn’t set in stone. Remember, you were born into this world with no sense of what you could or couldn’t do. Then, bit by bit, life started to teach you to limit yourself. A very young child doesn’t say: “I’m not the kind of person who could…” They haven’t yet learned to limit their own horizons.

One of the first steps is to re-examine and discard many of the limiting ideas you have about yourself; beliefs that you’ve collected along the way and are limiting you.

#2. Shut down the negative inner voice. We all have one and it’s time to let it go. When you start to doubt yourself, stop and listen, for a moment to that little negative inner voice. Whose voice is it really? A parent’s, old school bullies? A collection of many different voices from different times and people? One thing’s for sure; that little inner self-critical voice wasn’t yours originally. It may masquerade as belonging to you now, but it doesn’t really.

Tell yourself: “This is not my true voice!” Then start to challenge it, and change it.

#3. Turn a weakness into a strength. Dumbo, that adorable little elephant with the huge ears, was humiliated by his ears. He hated them at first. With great effort, he came to use them, to fulfill his destiny, by changing his attitude.
When we focus on what is not right about ourselves rather than what is, we miss opportunities for self-belief. Self-belief has a dual meaning. First, it can be used as a statement “I believe in myself.” Equally important is the underlying message – “I create my beliefs.” Many of us have ‘borrowed’ the beliefs’ of others that may not be healthy for us today.

Take any negative belief you have about yourself and creatively flip it so that it becomes, in its place, a positive resource – think: ’ears/Dumbo‘. You’ll find this exercise fun to do.

#4. Develop your ‘super powers’! Think of the typical powers of the more popular superheroes and write them down before you start your day. They may be such things as super speed, the ability to climb walls, flight, x-ray vision…whatever. Why do I suggest this? Because ‘priming’ your mind with qualities and positive characteristics can actually determine your behavior.

Not that you’ll start flying to the rescue of stranded citizens, but the pattern of superhero powers is one of ability, courage, and competence. In one study, people who were asked to write down as many superhero powers as they could think of were more likely to give to charity months afterwards. The pattern of giving to charity is that of being able. Prime your mind with ‘being able words’ before you start each day.

As well as superhero powers, write all kinds of other positive characteristics (whether you think you have them or not). Do this before you leave home. For example, I might write:

• Strength
• Dignity
• Calm
• Intelligence
• Humor
• Generosity
• Quick wittedness
• Charisma
• Sex appeal
• Approachability
• Popularity
• Determination

And so on. I’m not just asking you to focus on your own present or even future qualities here, but just on the words. Take a few moments writing them down each day, then a few moments scanning your list (it doesn’t matter if it’s a similar list each day). Reflect upon what each word means to you. You’ll be amazed how doing this will powerfully prime your unconscious mind.

#5. Be your own motivational coach. If you notice doubts rearing their ugly heads, imagine you (the clear-headed part of you) are the coach and the anxious part of you is the person you need to talk to.

Think what you would say to someone you really believe in if they started showing doubts. Sit down and say those same things to yourself. So if you are about to go for a job interview and you ’hear yourself‘ starting to express doubts, take a few moments to sit down, close your eyes, and coach yourself:

“Look, you can do this! It’s natural to feel a little anxious, but that just means you care about what you’re doing! You’ve got all the relevant experience and qualifications! Now get in there and stop whining! Even if you don’t get this job, you’re going to make me proud by giving it your best shot!”

#6. Create a powerful vision of yourself. Get into the habit of sitting down, closing your eyes, and watching yourself behaving decisively, calmly, and strongly. This powerful visualization exercise means you can learn from yourself how to be confident, have self-belief, and behave in ways that maximize chances of success. Imagine you are viewing yourself on a TV screen. The ‘you’ in the screen is showing the you watching how to act with self-belief. The more you do this, the more you’ll find that you’ll quite naturally start to become like the ’you‘ in the movie.

Yes, this is a workout that can change your life and just as when you are exercising the muscles in your body, it takes time and consistency to see and feel the results of your hard work.

My closing words for you are “You are so worth it!” Take charge of your self-muscles and take charge of your future. It’s just around the corner!

How did you do with the assessment last week? If you need to review the assessment click here. Were you surprised with your results? Most of us are, so you are not alone! It can be quite a jolt when we see something in black and white. Remember this: what gets recorded gets rewarded. You’ve accomplished the record, now it’s time to reap the reward.

When our self-muscles are strong, we can do anything we set out to do. I love the quote by Henry Ford – “Whether you believe you can, or believe you can’t, you’re right.” By strengthening your self-muscles, you can discover or uncover your untapped potential. And that’s when life gets really exciting!

My first recommendation is critical, as this is the foundation on which you are rating your strength. Using your dictionary or this link to http://dictionary.reference.com/, look up the definition of each self-muscle. This is not to suggest you don’t know the meaning – rather it is to provide you with clear, descriptive words that represent to you what you will experience when you have achieved your desired level of strength.

Next is a caution. When we do a new exercise, even if we are in shape, our muscles might protest a bit – right? Sore, tender, uncomfortable? It’s exactly the same when working on your self-muscles…it might be uncomfortable, sore, and you may want to give up. With a deep sigh, the voice in our head says, it’s not worth it. This is when I ask you to think of someone you admire and have them shout to you YES YOU ARE!!

Here’s an example using self-acceptance:
My definition:
Self- acceptance means that you understand and acknowledge your character and habits, stop comparing yourself and your achievements to others, and acknowledging your skills or the lack of them.

My workout:
Associate an old (habit, belief, attitude) with a new one that supports healthy self-acceptance. I will start with doing this 3 times a day – morning, afternoon and evening. Over time, the frequency will increase.
When I hear myself comparing me to someone else (old habit) I will superimpose my new habit “We each have such different talents – human beings are amazing!” I will do 5 repetitions of this new habit before moving on.

Now it’s your turn:
Progress through your list, recording your personal definition and then create one activity to propel you from where you are to where you want to be. This is a challenge – I totally get that! It isn’t easy AND it is so worthwhile! You will reap rewards for the remainder of your life.

How we act in life – interpersonally, emotionally and spiritually is how others see us. It’s more than our physical appearance. They sense our energy, attitudes, enthusiasm and zest. Those ‘invisible’ messages are your self-muscles at work. When your self-muscles are strong, you can begin to uncover your potential – and that is the greatest gift you can give to yourself and to others. Yes, we want to experience more of you as there is no one else on earth exactly like you!

Are you ready for more?
If you are, check in next week for the Six Steps to Become Even Stronger! With each specific step, examples are provided that make this easy, fast and effective for you. If you want to get started right away, and receive the full program now, please fill out the sign-up box below.

Maximize your results by taking action today! Don’t Wait!

Here’s what works for me. I’ve shifted my focus to achieving and maintaining balance mentally, spiritually, emotionally and physically. That’s the key for me. When I’m in balance, my four table legs are securely grounded, everything else seems to fall into place with no effort on my part. I can’t control people, places, events and circumstances. I can control how I react to and respond mentally, physically, spiritually and emotionally.

Let me know how this works for you.

Officially, Spring has arrived. That means garden clean-up and spruce-up. I knew exactly what needed to be done and planned out my week – a few hours each day in the yard and the remainder in the office. And what I productive week it was. I could visibly see my progress in the gardens each day and when then work was completed at the end of the week, it looked better than I’d visualized. I can’t say the same for the work in the office as seldom is the progress so visible. I’ve stumbled onto something – I thrive when I can see the progress. It feels good and I’m motivated to do more. Now, each day, I will strive to have a ‘combo’ day!

Need motivation to complete some tasks in your yard or office? Do you thrive when you see progress or cross items off a list? Whatever your motivators, sometimes just getting started is the hardest. Need support to bolster you through the process? Consider me your partner – call 714-847-1566 or email Susan at susan@susanbock.com to find out more.

Have you noticed the green returning to plants and trees that had faded over the winter months? How about flowers poking through the ground looking for the sunshine of spring?

Well, the effects of nature inspired me to look around my yard. What I noticed was the furniture in the atrium was looking pretty tired, faded and well-used. Definitely time to spruce it up a bit so out comes the metal brush to remove the old paint and grime, cheesecloth to wipe off any residue and now for the fun! A fresh coat of paint.

Did you know you have to show your ID to purchase spray paint? I’m a 60-year old woman who was asked for her ID – I love it!! That was good for a laugh all the way home.

What needs some attention in your life? What can you spruce up that will put a smile on your face?

It seems quite common today. Once upon a time, in the old days of business, giving away a product without charge was unheard of. Sure, Estee Lauder gave samples to celebrities and Gillette sold its razors cheap and made money on the blades But free didn’t become a serious option until the Internet gave us low-cost online distribution.

And yet, how often you do take advantage of the free services offered online? Is your head swimming by the daily emails of free stuff in your inbox? Most common offerings today are free teleclasses and ebooks, both usually packed with valuable information and a deal at the end to purchase other products that would enhance the information you just received.

You can take advantage of these freebies and benefit physically, emotionally, spiritually and mentally without spending a dime. Yes you may be added to an elist you may want to eventually unsubscribe from, but if it gained you access to tips and techniques that added value to your life and wellbeing, then it was worth it. Don’t be afraid to try something new.

Like most of us, I wasn’t a big fan of vegetables in my youth. There were a few I found palatable, not that I would make a steady diet of any! Today, I understand the value, importance and necessity to eat healthy, non-processed foods and that includes lots of raw vegetables. I also know how I feel when I don’t eat healthy.

Here’s a question to ponder – Isn’t it equally important to feed our minds and spirit a healthy diet? And what would that look like for you?

Oh you thought I forgot to mention the candy. Well, like most children, I loved candy, and the love of chocolate followed me into adulthood. Now I prefer brain candy. Yes, you read it right, brain candy. Research from Psychological Science shows that a 55-minute walk in the park sharpens cognitive function – especially attention. Note that it’s not just the exercise – because a city walk had a much smaller effect. Even looking at pictures of nature for ten minutes gives the brain a boost. So try adding some brain candy to your day. You will thank yourself!
