On a recent business trip to Phoenix, I indulged in one of my entertainments – people watching. It’s a game for me – what is the fun, funnier and funniest observations made during the trip. There is a plethora of material for a YouTube video that is sure to go viral! What a hoot!

People watching has long been an indulgence for me and I don’t see that changing . We have quirks, facial expressions and mannerisms that are so individual, so personal. I believe that is one of the components of our uniqueness. People are just so darn funny and often have no awareness of why I’m smiling. Have you found yourself smiling as you watch someone in a crowd, or standing in line? Do you notice the fidgeters, the bored , the frustrated, and the children who are fascinated with everything they see?

How about a group of people sitting at a gate in anticipation of their flight when an announcement is made about a delay, or gate change, or free tickets if agree to be bumped to the next flight? Depending on the announcement, there may be a collective cheer, groan or confusion. Do you think people would behave differently if they realized someone was observing them?

The business travelers are my favorite – perhaps that is because I spend so much time traveling on business. In general, this group of travelers is serious, focused, determined, and intent. It’s all about the destination – getting to the meeting, getting back home after the meeting. Timing – that’s the critical factor for them. Calculating, recalculating, and thank goodness for cell phones to make the last minute adjustments.

College students are my favorite to watch. I admire their aloofness, casualness, and ease of filling the time with texting, talking and sleeping. Have you noticed how they student can be asleep before the flight even takes off? How I envy that.

Here’s my tip – wherever you find yourself becoming distressed, frustrated, whatever, look around you and observe. You may discover someone watching you!
